Cleft lip or palate occurs in about one in thousand newborns, while boys are affected three to four times more than girls.
The etiology of cleft lip and palate is heterogeneous and is not entirely clear. Up to 13% of newborns have other apparent and hidden birth defects within monogenic genetic syndrome or chromosomal aberration. Therefore, we perform a detailed ultrasound examination of the fetus to exclude other possible birth defects. We also use the possibility of magnetic resonance imaging, which will show us the extent of the defect. Genetic testing is very important in this case. We recommend taking amniotic fluid for microarray examination, which will exclude even minor chromosome aberrations. The result is usually within 14 days after amniotic fluid collection.
